The majority of the MCAs on Thursday rejected a report on the intended upgrading the stadium to international standards, saying there were more questions to be answered on the project.
The report prepared by Meru County Assembly’s implementation committee indicates that the first phase of the project undertaken by the county administration under former governor Peter Munya cost Sh167.4 million, while the second phase by Sports Kenya is expected to gobble up close to Sh908.6 million.
This brings the total cost of the project to more than Sh1.07 billion. Phase One started in June 2014 and was expected to be complete in July 2015. The Sh167 million upgrade includes a standard pitch, an athletics track and 20,000-seater terraces.
Last year, Sports Kenya and the Meru County Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding for work on Phase Two, which was launched by, among others, Sports PS Kirimi Kaberia, Sports Kenya chairman Fred Muteti and Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi.
Phase Two would involve redoing the pitch to international standards, construction of more terraces, changing rooms, a VIP lounge, offices, parking space, and installation of floodlights, security and public address system.
