Maseno School on Saturday affirmed their dominance of sports in Kisumu County Term One Secondary School games, claiming three titles.

The hosts successfully defended the 15s rugby title, boys’ handball and reclaimed the basketball crown, which they lost to Kisumu Boys in last year’s competition.

In rugby 15s, Maseno, coached by Paul Nyamita, beat little-known Ndiru Secondary 35-3 to defend the title the won last year. It was a big disappointment to Ndiru who were looking to cause an upset for their first rugby title in the competition.

Maseno went ahead through a penalty that was converted by Walter Omanyo. Elvis Kadima, Allan Gabriel, Barnabas Osoro and Billy Okwaro then scored a try each which were all converted by Omanyo to seal Maseno’s victory.

Fredrick Maelo gave the hard-fighting Ndiru their consolation three points after converting a penalty.

Nyamita said their main focus now is to reclaim the Lake Region rugby title from St Mary’s Yala.

“All we want is to win all matches. In two weeks, we’ll be fighting for the Lake region title and we want to prepare for it well so that we reclaim the lake region title,” said Nyamita.

In boys’ basketball, Maseno beat champions Kisumu Boys High School 32-26  in what was a repeat of last year’s finals. Both teams begun the game strongly, with each going for the other’s neck but none got early advantage over the other, forcing the two coaches to call for a time-out.

Looking to avenge their last year’s loss, coach Gordon Oguttu’s Maseno side raced to an 18-8 lead at halftime, but fell behind 18-14 in the second half.

Girls’ title went to Kisumu Girls who edged out Sinyolo girls 16-8.

In boys’ handball, champions Maseno beat Chulaimbo High 28-23 in a tense final match. Kirembe Mixed beat Nyakach Girls 10-6 to win girls’ title.

Champions Kisumu Day beat Kisumu Boys 1-0 in a repeat of last year’s final to retain boys’ hockey title, as East African champions Sinyolo beat Kisumu Girls 2-1 to reign supreme.
