Court finds former Old Kampala DPC Joram Mwesigye guilty of assaulting a journalist, orders him to pay Shs6M
The Buganda Road Court magistrate has ordered Mwesigye to compensate Lwanga with Shs5 million in addition to paying a court fine of Shs1 million within 30 days or risk serving one year jail sentence.

Buganda Road Court Grade one magistrate, Gladys Kamasanyu on has found former Old Kampala DPC, Joram Mwesigye guilty of assaulting Andrew Lwanga and causing him serious bodily harm.

On Friday the found Mwesigye guilty and convicted him for assaulting Lwanga in 2015. Lwanga was at the time a journalist working with the now defunct WBS Television. Mwesigye was charged with three counts ranging from assault causing bodily harm and malicious damage of property.

The magistrate has ordered Mwesigye to compensate Lwanga with Shs5 million in addition to paying a court fine of Shs1 million within 30 days or risk serving one year jail sentence.

Court heard that on January 12, 2015 at Florida bar and guest house along Namirembe road in Kampala, Mr Mwesigye brutally assaulted Lwanga and one Joseph Ssetimba, from Bukedde a local television station. The two journalists were covering a demonstration by unemployed youths.

Investigators from the police Professional Standards Unit arrested Mwesigye on January 13, 2015 after the alleged brutal attack on the journalists. Mr Lwanga suffered severe spinal injuries allegedly inflicted on him by the beatings he received from Mwesigye.
