Jerusalem: Israeli security forces fire teargas at Palestinian protesters
The Israeli military said it was reinforcing troops in the occupied West Bank, deploying several new army battalions and putting other forces on standby, describing the measures as part of its "readiness for possible developments".

Israeli security forces fired tear gas and sprayed water cannons at demonstrators during clashes in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Thursday (December 7), as Palestinians gathered to protest against U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy on Wednesday (December 6) with his announcement, imperilling Middle East peace efforts and upsetting the Arab world and Western allies alike.

The Israeli military said it was reinforcing troops in the occupied West Bank, deploying several new army battalions and putting other forces on standby, describing the measures as part of its "readiness for possible developments".

Palestinian secular and Islamist factions were on a general strike to protest Trump's announcement, which Arabs and Muslims across the Middle East condemned, calling it an incendiary move.

Also in Bethlehem, Palestinians switched off Christmas lights on trees outside Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity, where Christians believe Jesus was born.
