In June 1985, nine Ugandans, led by Yoweri Museveni, checked into a guesthouse in a small Austrian town to chart a way forward for the country they hoped to lead one day.

Alfred Chyba, Uganda’s Consul in Austria says the nine men, who were at the time members of a rebel group could not find safe refuge in places with high numbers of Ugandan exiles like Sweden and  Austria was one of the few safe places in Europe in which they could meet and plan for the future of their armed struggle back home.
