Juma Bora beat long-serving Rodgers Siasa Mwafungo to become the new Coast Secondary Schools Sports Association chairman on Tuesday.

Bora, the Kwale District Secondary Schools Sports Association chairman who is also the Msambweni Secondary School principal, beat Mwafungo 14-11 at the hotly-contested elections at Coast Girls High School which saw his entire line-up get positions at the polls presided over by Abdulkarim Kike, the Coast Teachers Service Commission’s regional co-ordinator assisted by Lamu’s John Mutegi.

It was a big loss for Mwafungo who has served as coast schools sports head for the past eight years, and who is still gunning for the position of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association national chairman.

The post fell vacant after the death last year of incumbent, Kimutai Ng’etich. Bora said he was determined to ensure the coast regains its lost glory in sports disciplines in which they have been doing badly including athletics, football and rugby. “We want to ensure that only professionals are given a chance to coach our teams so that we can develop the youth and move the sports in schools to the next level,” he said.

Twaha Mwatsaho beat incumbent Emmanuel Mwandoro 15-10 to become the new treasurer   while Omar Munga retained his secretary’s post beating Macdonald Odzile 15-10.

Others elected  were Omar Mwaomari (vice chairman), Zuhura Hussein (deputy treasurer) and David Mombo  will be deputy secretary. Committee members are Shuma Kapanga, Silas Atsulu, George Otieno, Francis Kisilu  and Pamela Onyach while Leonarh Ameny has been co-opted.
