Edinah Kemunto to be charged anew over baby theft at KNH

What you need to know:

  • During the Tuesday session, Ms Mabuka had told court that she was ready to take plea without representation.

  • And when the charge was read out to her, she admitted to having stolen baby Prince Ouko on February 18 at Kenyatta National Hospital.

The woman arrested last week for allegedly stealing a three-week-old twin boy at the national referral hospital will be charged afresh on Friday.

This is after a Nairobi court allowed a request by lawyer James Mwangi, who on Tuesday offered to represent Ms Edinah Kemunto Mabuka in on a pro bono basis.

FRESH PLEA

During the Tuesday session, Ms Mabuka had told court that she was ready to take plea without representation.

And when the charge was read out to her, she admitted to having stolen baby Prince Ouko on February 18 at Kenyatta National Hospital.

However, Mr Mwangi asked the court to allow her to plead to the charges afresh.

He said he intends to speak to the accused on the legal process.

"Your honour, it is my request to the court to have this matter mentioned on a later date so that I can be able to speak with her first," said Mr Mwangi.

7 YEARS

Ms Mabuka appeared before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi who asked her age and whether she understood the consequences of pleading guilty.

"Do you know that you stand to be jailed for seven years because you have pleaded guilty?" the magistrate said.

Ms Mabuka told the court that she is unwell and needs medical attention.

But the investigating officer said she had already been taken to hospital.

The Chief Magistrate directed that she remain remanded at Muthaiga Police Station until Friday as she gets medical attention.
