Government agrees to salary increment for striking state prosecutors
The salary of the lowest officer will go from Shs550,000 shillings to Shs3.5 million Uganda and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Justice Mike Chibita will now earn Shs26.5 million.

The government has promised to increase the salaries of state prosecutors two days after they laid down their tools in protest against poor pay.

The salary of the lowest officer will go from Shs550,000 shillings to Shs3.5 million Uganda and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Justice Mike Chibita will now earn Shs26.5 million.

Justice and Constitutional affairs minister Maj. Gen Kahinda Otafiire has written a commitment letter explaining that a cabinet sub committee has also agreed to waive their taxes.

David Baxter Bakibinga, the head of the prosecutors association says, he is happy with the commitment given by government but he clarifies that this does not mean the strike has been called off. He says the strike will be likely called off when the prosecutors' general assembly meets and agrees to call off the strike.

Otafiire's commitment letter promises that the Increment will be in three months through a supplementary budget to be passed by parliament.

Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana told NTV that in an effort to resolve the impasse, the prime minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda will convene a crisis meeting on Friday.
