NDA cautions public about fake drugs and cosmetics on the market
The National Drug Authority will soon launch a crackdown on unscrupulous dealers selling counterfeit drugs and dangerous cosmetics.

The National Drug Authority will soon launch a crackdown on unscrupulous dealers selling counterfeit drugs and dangerous cosmetics.

Some of the skin creams and other cosmetics suspected to be fake and dangerous include skin balance cream, carol light, secret gel, skin success cream and Damovaate cream.

Acting NDA head of Drug Inspection Services, David Nahamya, says most of the creams, which are mainly used by women for skin bleaching, can lead to deadly skin conditions including skin cancer.

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards and the Uganda Revenue Authority supervises the importation of cosmetics but a bill is in the offing to shift this mandate to the National Drug Authority in order to ensure that the health of Ugandans is guaranteed.

NTV made random stops at shops in Kikuubo, a busy business area  in downtown Kampala, and found that many of of the prescription creams supposed to be sold in a pharmacy on recommendation of a medical doctor were being sold openly on the shelves.
