In a tense meeting this morning, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja was forced to adjourn the traders’ meeting after reading a police report indicating that more than 15 traders arrested yesterday were still in custody.
The traders were arrested on the first day of the Kampala traders’ strike, which was launched in protest against unfair taxation and the government’s failure to stop foreigners—particularly Chinese and Indians—who come to Uganda as manufacturers but end up operating retail shops, in violation of the Trade Act.
The meeting turned chaotic as traders demanded the release of their colleagues before proceeding with discussions aimed at ending the strike.
