Besigye to be brought before Uganda military court

This file photo shows veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye being led by prison warders to a court holding cell

What you need to know:

  • According to sources in Uganda, following his disappearance, he was being held at Makindye military barracks.
  • It's not yet clear what he will be charged with.

Veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye will be brought before a Ugandan military court on Wednesday, coming just days after he was abducted from Nairobi.

Several senior members of his party, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), are today camped at a military court in Kampala where he is set to be brought.

According to sources in Uganda, following his disappearance, he was being held at Makindye military barracks. It's not yet clear what he will be charged with.

FDC top officials at the court include interim president Erias Lukwago,  chairman Waswa Birigwa, Salaam Musumba and deputy Kampala lord mayor Doreen Nyanjura.

Several military police officers could be seen going in and around the court premises, with access to the facility restricted.

Journalists were ordered to stand outside the court as they await further instructions on whether they will be allowed inside the courtroom or not.

Other Ugandan activists arrested in Kenya

Dr Besigye's disappearance from Nairobi is not the first such case. It follows the July 23 arrest of 36 Ugandan activists associated with him in Kisumu.

The political activists were abducted and ferried back to Uganda where they were charged with treason and remanded to Kitalya Prison.

The activists, who were recently released on bail, pleaded not guilty to the charges and said they were attending a workshop when they were arrested.

The 36 activists alleged they were tortured during their detention.
