Tax arrears mount as businesses struggle with compliance in Uganda

Tax compliance remains a major hurdle for many businesses and individuals in Uganda, with experts blaming the challenge on limited understanding and negligence by business owners, some of whom allow arrears to pile up to as much as 50 or even 100 million shillings before the taxman cracks down. While the Uganda Revenue Authority continues its awareness campaigns, experts say more needs to be done to bridge the compliance gap. As URA’s Supervisor of Tax Education, Hasfa Seguya, explains, many traders often blame high taxes, forgetting that the authority only implements what lawmakers pass. Ronah Nahabwe reports.
