Doris Akol, the Commissioner General of the Uganda Revenue Authority wants the OTT tax to be charged directly on data arguing that charging it on mobile money has made it possible for many people to evade the controversial tax.

While appearing before Parliament’s Finance Committee on Tuesday morning, Akol revealed that the tax was in fact not performing well.

In July last year, Government introduced the "over-the-top" (OTT) tax commonly known as the social media tax for online services such as twitter, facebook and whatsApp.

The tax was met with stiff resistance from politicians and citizens with many still grappling with court cases over the same matter.

On Monday, April 29th, Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine appeared at Buganda Road Court where he was charged with disobedience of statutory duty, an offence prosecution says he committed in July 2018.
