LOP Ssenyonyi calls for more SAGE money
With Uganda joining the rest of the world to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons today, some legislators are calling on the government to double the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE), a social protection programme to support the elderly. Led by the Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, the MPs say the current amount is insufficient to meet the needs of older persons. Started in 2010, the programme initially targeted 100 older persons per sub-county, but the number of beneficiaries has gradually increased. This year, the government lowered the SAGE age limit to benefit more older persons. The call came as the legislators paid a visit to the Mapeera Bakateyamba Home of the Elderly in Nalukolongo.
