DPP struggles to recover UGX 88 billion in stolen funds
The Department of Asset Recovery in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions says it is yet to recover at least 32 billion shillings from four former convicts who stole over 88 billion shillings in a 2012 embezzlement scandal. Speaking to NTV, Josephine Namatovu, who heads the asset recovery team in the DPP’s office, said the state has only recovered 4.4 billion shillings. The Anti-Corruption Court convicted three officials and ordered them to refund 50 billion shillings. However, President Museveni has pardoned former Public Service Ministry Permanent Secretary Jimmy Rwamafa, exonerating him from paying his share of 16 billion shillings. As Sudhir Byaruhanga reports, Rwamafa is now exempt from the payment.
