Fishing community urges government to lift restrictions on mukene fishing
The Mukene fishing community at Nkata Landing Site in Buvuma Island District is pleading with the government to reverse recent restrictions that have severely affected their livelihood. They want the government to lift restrictions on fishing mukene, or silver fish, through the so-called "hurry-up" method instead of the kyota kyota method used to catch larger fish, which they say is not as high-yielding. Earning a livelihood at this landing site is difficult, as most businesses, like private schools, have closed due to parents being unable to pay their children’s fees.
