NEBBI. Three vehicles have been burnt after a fuel tanker burst into flames at Goli Customs in Nebbi district on the wee hours of Friday.
According to an eyewitness, the tanker burst after the truck’s driver tried to apply brakes. The eyewitness says that the friction caused the heat that ignited the fire.
“I just heard a loud sound of an explosion because we were already sleeping at around 3 am. We had to run out of the house only to find the truck in flames already,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the Nebbi district LC5 Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Urombi, told Daily Monitor this morning that about 52 children ran in disarray from their houses. The chairman, with others, tried to intercept some of the children from as far as Nebbi town.
“The situation is not good because people have lost a lot of their household property when their houses caught fire.”
The trucks were awaiting clearance this morning to proceed to the neighboring DRC. He said a truck, a fuel tanker, and a Coaster that had parked at the roadside waiting for clearance to Mahagi town in DRCongo also got burnt.
“There has been no death case reported but we also rescued a seven-month-old baby from one of the houses. We are still ascertaining the extent of the damage. But the scene is bad,” Mr. Urombi added.
Some of the children with their mothers sought safety at St Stephen’s Cathedral in Goli after their property was destroyed by the fire in their houses.
Last year, some drivers were unhappy with the slow pace of clearance at Goli customs by the Customs officers that force vehicles to queue over 100 meters. They say that this is a recipe for such a disaster.
