Iron sheets demonstrators remanded for assaulting a police officer

Eight youths have been remanded to Luzira prison following their arrest on Tuesday this week for demonstrating against the delayed indictment of Ministers allegedly involved in the theft of Karamoja iron sheets.
The group is facing charges of assaulting a police officer while she was executing her duties. The officer in question is ASP Flavia Musimenta, who is in charge of the Mini-price police post.
According to the prosecution, the suspects unlawfully assaulted ASP Musimenta. The individuals who have been arrested are Bukenya Moses, Ndyasiima Nelson, Najjuma Sanyu, Kawooya Sharif, Nayesire Gilbert, Batanda Augustine, Ssegawa Shafia, and Ssemakula Teddy.
They were arrested while carrying iron sheets and placards along Ben Kiwanuka Street in Kampala, where they were calling on the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to begin the prosecution of the alleged Karamoja iron sheet thieves.
During their arrest, the group is said to have assaulted ASP Musimenta. However, they have denied the offense before Buganda Road Court Grade one magistrate Asuman Muhumuza, who has not given them a chance to present their bail application on Thursday.
The suspects appeared in court walking in the dock while limping and complaining of chest pains, lower abdomen, and back pains. This prompted magistrate Muhumuza to order that they access medical attention at Luzira prison, where they will spend this year's Easter season.
The suspects are set to return to court on the 12th of April 2023 to present their bail application, and the DPP is expected to give an update on the stage of police inquiries at that time.
