Land Commission boss raises red flag on list tabled by Minister Kamya

A war is brewing between the Ministry of Lands and the Uganda Land Commission over the list of land owners that are supposed to be compensated using the Ushs 18bn supplementary budget tabled before Parliament.
The list which was tabled by Minister of Lands Beti Kamya includes the Lusanja and Ndeeba church land owners among others .
In a letter tabled in Parliament, the Chairperson of the Land Commission Beatrice Byenkya Nyakaisiki denied knowledge of the list of individuals that Lands Minister Beti Kamya presented to Parliament as the people seeking compensation.
As part of the request, the Minister sought Ushs 3.4bn to pay business man Medard Kiconco who claims ownership of the Lusanja land.
She also requested for Ushs 3.82 bn to compensate Dolovical Mwanje who demolished the Ndeeba church.
“The Commission is not privy to this list and wants the Minister to be brought to order for having usurped its powers knowingly. To hood-wick Parliament that we are privy to this list is deplorable.” Reads part of Byenkya’s letter to Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.
In response, State Minister for Lands Persis Namuganza claims that Nyakaisiki was out of order.
“We want to solve the problem of people sleeping outside, and then someone from where the money is going says I am blocking it, what’s that?” Namuganza told NTV.
The disagreement has since attracted the suspension of the processing of a 292 billion shilling supplementary budget that among others includes Ushs 18.5 bn that is meant to buy 18m doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
