Parliament Speaker Anita Among refuses to address mismanagement allegations
Friday March 15 2024
The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has declined to address allegations of mismanagement of funds and irregular staff recruitment within the institution she leads. Despite pressure from some MPs, Speaker Among dismissed the accusations as being propagated by unreliable sources. Lwemiyaga County MP, Theodore Ssekikubo, raised concerns about conducting business as usual while public outcry grows over the institution's expenditures.
The issue was initially raised by the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi. However, Speaker Among stated that the parliamentary commission would convene soon to address these concerns, with the outcomes to be presented in parliament. Over the past three weeks, social media activists have circulated documents alleging nepotism and financial misconduct, although their authenticity remains unverified.
Speaker Among emphasized that parliamentary debates should not be based on rumors and hearsay, citing procedural constraints against such discussions.
