A police constable attached to Tuba Police Post under Kira Road Police Station has been remanded to Luzira Prison after accidentally discharging a bullet that killed a man at King's Plaza along Container Village. Detective Constable Griffin Ampamize, who was escorting a mobile phone theft suspect at the time of the incident, has pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi at Buganda Road Court.

The incident occurred on 18th December last year when Detective Ampamize encountered resistance from a crowd while transporting the theft suspect to custody. In an attempt to manage the situation, Ampamize reportedly discharged his firearm, and a bullet struck Oryek James Obora in the chest, resulting in his instant death.

At his court appearance, Detective Ampamize was informed of his right to apply for bail. However, as he had no sureties present in court, Chief Magistrate Kayizzi had no choice but to remand him to prison until 20th February 2025. The state has reported that investigations into the matter have been completed.

Manslaughter, under Uganda’s Penal Code Act, carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The case remains under close scrutiny as legal proceedings continue.
