President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced the appointment of his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as the new Chief of Defence Forces.
Kainerugaba, who previously served as his father’s senior presidential advisor overseeing special operations, has held various key roles within the military. Notably, he commanded the Special Forces Group, an elite unit responsible for presidential security and key installations. Additionally, he has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts, particularly in managing Uganda’s relations with Rwanda.
His elevation to the position of Chief of Defence Forces has reignited discussions and speculation about his potential succession to the presidency, given his familial ties to President Museveni.
Other military leadership changes
Alongside Kainerugaba's appointment, Gen Museveni named Lt Gen Samuel Okiding as the deputy CDF, replacing Gen Peter Elwelu, who now serves as one of the president's senior advisors. Maj Gen Jackson Bakasumba takes over as the new Joint Chief of Staff, succeeding Maj Gen Leopold Eric Kyanda, who assumes the role of Defence attaché. Brig Gen David Mugisha of the Special Forces Command has been promoted to Major General, while Brigadier General Asaph Nyakyikuru has been elevated from Colonel to Brigadier General, assuming command of the Commando Brigade.
