A senior police officer, 48-year-old Inspector Emmanuel Wilson Abura, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the strangulation murder of his colleague's 9-year-old niece.
According to court documents, Wilson and the victim's uncle, Corporal Joel Mwonda, shared a residence in the Nalya Housing Estate. The prosecution successfully argued that tensions between the families escalated into "irreconcilable misunderstandings and persistent grudges," ultimately leading to the tragic event.
Justice Margret Mutonyi presided over the case and found Wilson guilty of murder. With the sentence, Wilson faces the possibility of spending the rest of his natural life behind bars. Should he maintain good health, the court ruling allows for his release in 2073 at the advanced age of 97.
This case sent shockwaves through the Ugandan police force, raising concerns about domestic violence.
