Winnie Byanyima says she stands by her husband
Winnie Byanyima, the wife of Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former leader of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change party, has spoken out after her husband's arrest in Kenya over the weekend. Byanyima, who serves as the executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, explained that Besigye had traveled to Nairobi to attend a book launch for Martha Karua, a Kenyan politician. He had traveled with his colleague, Hajji Obed Kamulegeya, on Saturday and had booked an apartment. However, Besigye failed to attend the event on Sunday, raising concerns among his hosts.
Byanyima also noted that both Besigye’s and Kamulegeya’s phones were switched off, prompting colleagues in Kampala to worry. A senior military contact later confirmed that Besigye was being held at the Makindye Military Police barracks. In response to this development, Byanyima stated that she is traveling to Uganda to challenge Besigye's trial in a military court. She also spoke to Sudhir Byaruhanga earlier today regarding the situation.
