Women in Hoima threatened with arrest over unpaid UWEP loans
Women in Hoima District face arrest over unpaid loans from the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP). Over the past six years, many women’s groups have failed to repay the revolving funds, with defaulters owing over 850 million Uganda Shillings. UWEP, launched by the government to empower women and promote economic growth, aims to improve access to financial services and equip women with skills for enterprise development. A team led by UWEP Focal Person Joyce Kabatarya recently visited Kitonya Parish in Buhanika Sub-County to follow up on funds disbursed to 23 women’s groups.
