Today is International Women's Day and Spark TV as a female Television Channel is recognizing female personalities that have excelled and paved way for other women in Uganda. It is a fact that Women are powerful, resourceful, and energetic that without them the world would miss out on a lot. Today we celebrate some of the most influential women in Uganda who are in Business, politics, sports, entertainment, and different positions of leadership.
Rebecca Kadaga
Rebecca Kadaga, 64, is one of the most powerful and significant female leaders in Uganda. Rebecca Kadaga is a lawyer, politician and Member of Parliament (MP) for Kamuli District.
She has held the position of Speaker of Parliament in Uganda since 19 May 2011.
For Kadaga, being the first female speaker of Parliament is a great and unique opportunity for her to leave a significant stamp on the legislative arena.
Jane Ruth Aceng
Jane Ruth Aceng is a Ugandan paediatrician and politician. She is the Minister of Health, a post she was appointed to on the 6th of June 2016. Aceng will always be remembered for her aggressive efforts in the fight against the spread of the COVID 19 pandemic in Uganda in 2020.
Pheona Nabasa Gladys Wall
Pheona Nabasa Gladys Wall, 40, commonly known as Pheona Wall, is a Ugandan lawyer and Public Relation Officer with over 15 years’ experience. Nabasa became an inspirational female figure when she was elected president of the Uganda Law Society in September 2020. Her approach towards legal issues in the country has been noted as futuristic.
Sarah Bireete
Sarah Bireete is a lawyer, Human rights activist, and the executive director of the Center for Constitutional Governance (CCG). The Human rights advocate has played a pivotal role in the fight for human rights in Uganda through her CCG initiative, through her CCG initiative, an institution that acts as one of the constitutional watchdogs in the country.
Shamim Malende
Shamim Malende, is a Ugandan lawyer, politician, and community activist. Malende is also the elected Member of Parliament for Kampala district in Uganda’s 11th Parliament. The aggressive lawyer is not only influential because of her successful legal career but a key figure in the fight for equal justice especially for the less privileged.
Sylvia Namutebi
Commonly known as Mama Phina, Sylvia Namutebi is a businesswoman, traditional healer and community leader. Her parents couldn't afford to support her through school hence she dropped out at an early age. Mama Phina’s humble beginning has made her a philanthropist because she understands that by giving back to the community, she can empower the less privileged. Her story is motivating and one of never giving up despite your background. She rose to fame as a traditional healer but now she is a household name for her generosity and contribution to Uganda's women affairs.
Faridah Nakazibwe
Faridah Nakazibwe is a TV presenter and anchor currently working with NTV Uganda. Nakazibwe has not just had a successful media career but also become the audience's favourite because of her impressive personality. The soft-spoken TV presenter has positively impacted many lives through "Mwasuze Mutya" a TV show that motivates and empowers people through life coaching, counselling and topics that discuss health, leadership, parenting among others for the well being of Ugandans and those abroad.
Quin Abenakyo
Quiin Abenakyo is a beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Uganda in 2018. The 25-year-old beauty became a force to reckon with when she represented Uganda in the Miss World 2018 pageant and was crowned Miss World Africa 2018. Quin’s mission is to motivate young women especially young mothers to work hard for their future and never give up despite the odds against them.
Sheeba Karungi
Sheeba Karungi is an award-winning Ugandan singer and entertainer. The singer's incredible power in the music industry has increased tremendously due to her hard work. Sheebah is an influential figure because of her triumphant journey from a humble background to the successful musician that she is. She is not just making a name for herself but also creating employment opportunities for the youth through her various business ventures.
Halimah Nakaayi
Halimah Nakaayi is a Ugandan middle-distance runner. Nakaayi has become a significant figure and inspiration to many women because of her various achievements in the sports arena. Her biggest success is the gold medal in the 800m at the 2019 World Athletics Championships.
