Uganda maintains a strong position as an important player in the regional fish trade, but exports remain largely low-value, a new report shows. The Commissioner for Fisheries Resources Management, Daisy Olyel Cairo, says key challenges include fish feed and seed, which the government is addressing through a new breeding company backed by the World Bank. Officials warn that without urgent reforms, direct employment could stagnate at 183,000 jobs, far below the 600,000 projected by 2030.
