In Lwengo District, health officials are calling on the Ministry of Health to regulate Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), citing their role in rising maternal deaths, particularly due to postpartum haemorrhage. According to the Ministry’s 2024 report, haemorrhage accounts for 43% of maternal deaths, many occurring under unregulated care. With only 17% of pregnant women seeking timely medical help in Lwengo, leaders say political resistance has undermined previous efforts to address the issue.
