Lack of funding holds nuclear progress
Uganda’s Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa says there is an urgent need for a policy in the future to address radiation-related accidents. This is despite the presence of an Atomic Energy Act, enacted in 2008, aimed at ensuring the safety and protection of individuals and the environment from dangers associated with ionizing radiation. Last year, the government signed a Memorandum of understanding with a Korean firm to build the country’s first nuclear plant valued at $9 billion and expects to onboard about 1000 megawatts by 2030.
