Acholi elders reject Balaalo land claims
A joint forum of elders from the Acholi sub-region has dismissed claims by migrant herdsmen, also known as the Balaalo, that they own land in the area. The elders insist that land in Acholi is communally owned and does not belong to any individual or family, rendering land transactions there null and void. This comes in the wake of controversies surrounding Presidential Executive Orders Number 3 of 2023 and Number 2 of 2025, which direct all nomadic herdsmen to exit the northern region. A section of the herdsmen, also known as the Balaalo, have claimed to have genuinely purchased land in the area.
