East African Parliament seeks to ban Female Genital Mutilation
A law is in the making at the regional Parliament focused on banning female genital mutilation across the eight East African Community states. Proponents of the law say it is crucial to have legislation at the regional level, given the weaknesses in individual state laws to combat the practice. Somalia, the latest entrant to the East African Community, has an FGM prevalence rate of over 90%, compared to Uganda's 0.2%. It is feared that FGM could become widespread in the region as practicing communities exploit gaps in states with fewer restrictions
