Leaders seek solutions to conflicts between locals, UWA at Mt Elgon
Conflicts between the Uganda Wildlife Authority and locals bordering Mt. Elgon National Park in the Sebei and Bugisu sub-regions have persisted since 1992 when the government gazetted the park. The role of the Uganda Wildlife Authority has been to protect the park and ensure that wild animals are not harmed by people. However, over the years, locals bordering the park have encroached on it, creating conflicts with the park authorities. Many people have died, and some have been injured as a result. In the following report, NTV's DANIEL KIBET spoke to leaders of communities bordering Mt. Elgon National Park and the Uganda Wildlife Authority to explore how these conflicts can be resolved amicably.
