Sarah Mullally’s historic appointment as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury has drawn some ambivalence from Uganda’s Anglican leadership. Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba, speaking at a school in Kampala on Friday, emphasized his church’s commitment to scriptural authority. He said they don’t definitively support anything that deviates from the scriptures.
Standing firm on his position, Kaziimba declared that the Church of Uganda will keep to the scriptures and is not concerned about anybody who deviates from them. About two-thirds of the estimated 85 million Anglicans globally live in countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda, highlighting the deepening divide between the Church of England and its African counterparts over women’s ordination.
