Uganda continues to suffer from high levels of deforestation. A significant driver of this destruction is the widespread cutting of trees for firewood and charcoal production. With over 80% of Uganda’s population relying on wood fuel as a primary source of energy for cooking, the Ministry of Energy has introduced several interventions to
tackle this challenge.
One such initiative was the introduction of improved charcoal production technologies — specifically, the Casamance Kiln and the Retort Kiln, designed to increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact. In today’s Eco Talk, we examine how this technology has performed and whether it has been embraced by the communities it was intended to support.
