Traders in Kampala City’s central business district are on strike, with the majority of shops in the city centre shut down as the traders protest against what they term as unfair taxation, which they say is causing their businesses to fail.

The traders are also unhappy with the increasing presence of foreign business people, mainly from China and India, who are licensed as manufacturers but end up setting up wholesale and retail outlets—sectors that are supposed to be preserved for indigenous business people.

Steven Mbidde spoke to the acting chairman of the Kampala City Traders Association, Isa Ssekitto, earlier today.
