Kiboko Mabati leads campaign against asbestos in schools

It has been well over a decade since asbestos roofing was officially deemed hazardous and subsequently banned in Uganda. Yet even today, hundreds of public facilities, including schools and hospitals, still rely on these dangerous sheets. A 2024 report from the Ministry of Education notes that, while precise numbers aren’t available, schools in need of renovation could be in the thousands among the country’s 7,000 government-owned primary and over 500 secondary schools. Now, Kiboko Mabati is spearheading a campaign to educate communities about the risks of asbestos exposure, from cancer to other chronic health effects.
