Reflecting on 25 years of multiparty politics in Uganda: challenges and milestones

It has been two decades since the return to the multiparty system in Uganda. Had political parties been allowed to operate continuously since the National Resistance Army, under President Museveni, captured state power in 1986, this year would have marked the 40th consecutive anniversary of their political activities.

In reality, political parties have operated legally for only 25 years out of the 62 years since independence, often facing interference from the state. In this section of The 1995 Constitution at 30, Jackson Onyango delves into history to highlight the crises experienced by political parties.
