Uganda, like many African countries, continues to grapple with alarming levels of forest degradation. In the 1990s, the country’s forest cover stood at 24%, but by the 2000s, it had plummeted to just 8%.
Thanks to ongoing restoration efforts, there has been a slight recovery to 13%, but much more needs to be done to restore forest cover to earlier levels.
One of the hardest-hit areas is Kalangala District. We visited the district to understand the scale of the problem—and the ongoing efforts to reverse it.
