Barley harvest boosts income for farmers in Kween district
Hundreds of farmers in Uganda’s eastern district of Kween are now in the harvest season for barley, a key raw material used in beer production. We joined Uganda Breweries on a tour through the rocky roads and hills of this vast district, which borders Kapchorwa to the west and Bukwo to the east. The crop, grown in cool weather conditions at altitudes several thousand meters above sea level, is emerging as a major source of income, potentially surpassing other cash crops in the district. According to Uganda Breweries, a kilogram of barley currently fetches 1,700 Ugandan shillings.
