1988 Uganda Airlines Rome Crash: Looking back on an event that changed many lives
October 17, 1988, was a dark day for Uganda's aviation sector. In the early hours of the morning, Uganda Airlines Flight QU 775 crashed as it attempted to land at Rome-Fiumicino Airport. Of the 52 passengers on board, 19 survived. What really happened during that flight? Gillian Nantume spoke to Captain Stephen Makyeli, who was Uganda Airlines' Chief Pilot at the time, and Engineer Dick Turinawe, who was a ground engineer. Both men were part of the team that investigated the cause of the crash.
