Kyankwanzi school; Students only go for holidays in December
Most learners at St Joseph Primary and Secondary Schools in Kigando, Kyankwanzi District, study on bursaries provided by the school because their parents and guardians cannot afford school fees. To compensate for the bursaries, close to 800 learners carry out gardening and other manual work from which the school gets money that is used to pay teachers and other support staff, as well as buy school requirements such as food. To sustain the model, students stay at school to work and only break off for the long December-January holiday. The community schools were established in 1992 under the stewardship of the late Rev. Father Lucas David Kasole and they mainly run on donations. MTN Foundation has donated some items to the school.
