Lawyers fail to meet Chief Justice over court martial ruling
A group of lawyers representing Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale has failed to meet Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo over a delayed ruling in a matter concerning whether civilians can be tried in the army court martial. Following a 2016 Constitutional ruling in favor of former Nakawa MP Michael Kabaziguruka, which made the trial in the court martial unlawful, former Attorney General William Byaruhanga appealed the judgment of the Supreme Court, which is yet to decide on the matter. The lawyers, including the lead counsel in Besigye's case, Martha Karua, and Erias Lukwago, wanted the Chief Justice, who sits on the Supreme Court bench, to explain the delay in deciding the matter. However, the legal team was unable to meet the Chief Justice, who was reportedly on official duty.
