Sugarcane farming worsens poverty in Busoga region
Sugarcane farming, which is a major cash crop in the Busoga sub-region, has inadvertently worsened poverty in the area. Although it replaced coffee as the region's primary crop, the shift has not translated into prosperity for many locals. According to a 2022 Uganda Bureau of Statistics report, Busoga is one of the poorest regions in Uganda, with 29.2% of its population living in poverty, well above the national average. Critics argue that sugarcane farming has not led to the economic growth that was anticipated.
