Police have arrested the acting Chairperson of the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA), Issa Ssekitto.
Ssekitto was apprehended while attending a traders’ meeting on Nabugabo Street in downtown Kampala.
The traders began their strike on Tuesday, protesting what they describe as exorbitant rental charges and a controversial weight tax system on textiles and garments, among other long-standing concerns.
While some sources claim that Ssekitto’s arrest is linked to allegations of inciting violence, police are yet to issue an official statement detailing the reasons behind his detention.
