Sugarcane farmers from across the four cane-growing regions in the country, namely Busoga, Bunyoro, Buganda, and Northern Uganda, have petitioned the Minister of Trade and Industry to reconsider his nominations to the Sugar Council, stating that the nominated officials don’t represent their interests. The new Sugar Act provides for four representatives to the national sugar council, nominated by the sugar-producing regions, but it has emerged that the minister considered other names other than those seconded by farmers.
