Former Makerere University Business School principal, Prof. Wasswa Balunywa, has been released on UGX 15 million cash bail after spending two nights in Luzira Prison on charges of illegal staff recruitment.
The Anti-Corruption Court granted the bail after the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) raised no objection, with Chief Magistrate Reacheal Nakyazze ordering each of Balunywa’s eight sureties to execute a Shs100 million non-cash bond.
He is expected back in court on October 15 for a pre-trial hearing.
Balunywa is accused of abuse of office during his tenure at MUBS between February and April 2023, having allegedly recruited unqualified individuals as Administrative Assistants. A second file accuses him of irregularly appointing over 100 academic staff, 17 administrators, and 69 support staff—a role meant for the Appointments Committee—leading to undue government expenditure.
His co-accused, Jacqueline Namaganda, then Acting HR Director and now Chief Quality Assurance Officer at MUBS, faces three counts of neglect of duty for allegedly failing to verify the recruits’ eligibility.
