Some 40 kilometres from Gulu City, in Patiko Sub-county, a British agent, Sir Samuel Baker, established Baker’s Fort, commonly known as Fort Patiko. In 1872, he used it as a base to stop the slave trade in the Equatorial Province. In 1879, it was occupied and expanded by Colonel Charles Gordon, another agent of the colonial government. The site was gazetted as a national historic monument in 1972. Emmy Ejara visited the fort and has this story.
