Wild Heritage: How monarchs are confronting a cultural crossroads

Africa is home to over a thousand monarchies, many of which are rooted in distinct ethnic groups across the continent. In several of these communities, there is a longstanding tradition of using wildcat skins and other wildlife products as regalia during cultural and religious ceremonies. Some of these items are considered heirlooms, passed down through generations. Uganda is no exception. Many traditional and cultural leaders in the country possess such items as part of their heritage. In today’s EcoTalk, we explore the cultural significance of these items and how traditional leaders are playing a role in conserving the very species they symbolize.
