Uganda's rice industry adapts after wetland ban, upland cultivation rises
Following President Museveni's directive banning rice growing in wetlands, 40,000 Ugandans involved in rice growing, processing, and trade were affected, leading to a significant increase in rice imports in the country. Now, farmers in the northern and western regions, where upland is prevalent, have embraced the cultivation of this variety, allowing them to earn money in a short time. Farm gate prices are now between Shs 4,500 and Shs 5,000. Uganda currently produces 730,000 tons of rice annually under the NARO-JICA collaboration.
