Bunyoro out growers ask URA to stop taxing them
Sugarcane out-growers in the Bunyoro Sub-Region have welcomed the newly enacted Sugar Act, following President Museveni’s assent to the Sugarcane (Amendment) Bill, 2023 on May 30, 2025. The bill, which was passed by Parliament in April, aims to streamline operations in the sugar industry and strengthen protections for farmers. However, Robert Atugonza, Chairperson of the Out-Growers under Kinyara Sugar Ltd, has called on the Uganda Revenue Authority to stop levying income tax on sugarcane, arguing that it should be exempt as a raw material.
